How to install Google Chrome on Debian 6

The issue

For compatibility reasons I had to install Debian 6 on one of my workstations and even known it had just became “oldstable” I had a really hard time installing Chrome in it. Google dropped support for this operating system last month and I could not find instructions how to overcome this nor even a archive where I could find a compatible package. So, after spending hours trying to fix it I decided to write down the steps I took on how to install Google Chrome on Debian 6.

The solution

Installing it is very straight forward, with no file changes or hacks. You pretty much just need to follow these few steps:

  1. Download the 27.0.1453.110-r202711 version (you might find it here);
  2. Install the following packages using apt-get: libgconf2-4, libgtk2.0-0, libnss3-1d, libasound2, libxss1, libcurl3 and xdg-utils;
  3. Install the Google Chrome version 27.0.1453.110-r202711 you just downloaded using the dpkg -i command.

Do you want just the copy’n paste version?

If you’re lazy, you can copy and paste the lines below to execute the steps listed above:

# For 32-bits kernels:
wget http://95.31.35.30/chrome/pool/main/g/google-chrome-stable/google-chrome-stable_27.0.1453.110-r202711_i386.deb
apt-get install libgconf2-4 libgtk2.0-0 libnss3-1d libasound2 libxss1 libcurl3 xdg-utils
dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_27.0.1453.110-r202711_i386.deb

# For 64-bits kernels:
wget http://95.31.35.30/chrome/pool/main/g/google-chrome-stable/google-chrome-stable_27.0.1453.110-r202711_amd64.deb
apt-get install libgconf2-4 libgtk2.0-0 libnss3-1d libasound2 libxss1 libcurl3 xdg-utils
dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_27.0.1453.110-r202711_amd64.deb

    The instructions were the most helpful that I have found. However, I still cannot launch Google Chrome.

    Thanks anyway,
